How to remove yourself from the web using technology

Consumers have a legitimate interest in controlling information flow on the internet and reducing the threat of identity theft, because personal data is such an important issue.

A new tool from Google called “Results about you” allows consumers to ask for their personal data to be removed from search results.

Consumers can request removal from people-search websites like Spokeo, MyLife.com and Radaris by paying for an internet privacy service such as DeleteMe, Kanary and OneRep.

In light of the large amount of personal data floating around on the internet, consumers should be able to control how the information flows. Some are opting out of certain data-collection websites or using paid removal services to do the scrubbing for themselves.

Which option you choose depends largely on the extent of your privacy concerns, the amount of time and energy you are willing to expend and the amount you are willing to pay to protect your privacy.

Is it bothersome to you that people know your phone number and that you are married? ” said Stephen B. Wicker, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University.

Numerous online companies, known as data brokers, collect personal information from consumers and sell it to other organizations. People’s names, mailing addresses, birthdays, relatives’ names, social media, property values, occupations, and other information can be accessed for scams.

In terms of identity theft, they are like tiles in a mosaic. Adam K. Levin, a consumer affairs advocate and former director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs who co-hosts a cybersecurity podcast, said the more tiles you have, the more accurate the impersonation will be.

Despite legitimate reasons, some people may have heightened sensitivity about their personal information being available to the public. Dr. Damon McCoy, an associate professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, said this includes those who have experienced harassment or stalking, as well as those who work in law enforcement or in high-profile corporate jobs.

It is possible to limit the amount of personal information available on the internet for those who wish to do so. Spokeo, MyLife.com, and Radaris, for example, allow consumers to request removal from their databases through their websites.

Google recently introduced a new “Results about you” tool that allows consumers to request that their personal phone number, home address, and email address be removed from search results.
