Internal campaign research raised red flags before his election

US congressman George Santos, research by his own campaign raised several red flags about him.

There were discrepancies in the New York Republican’s personal life, CV, and campaign finance disclosures.

In a first published by CBS News on Wednesday, parts of the secret research were revealed.

No comment has yet been made by Mr Santos, who is currently facing federal fraud charges.

During the 2022 campaign, the 35-year-old beat a Democrat-leaning congressional district, touting himself as the nation’s first LGBT Republican.

As it prepared for possible attacks by opponents, Mr Santos’ campaign commissioned a vulnerability report months before that victory.

The research was circulated among top Republican campaign strategists in the US House of Representatives, according to CBS.

Reports indicate that the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports Republicans for the House, withheld its support for Santos.

The report was widely disseminated, but at least one member of the House leadership campaigned with the candidate.

Democratic operatives did their own research on the Republican during the campaign, but they missed many of the details included in the internal report.

In addition to seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, two counts of misrepresenting himself to Congress, and one count of stealing public funds, Mr. Santos was charged earlier this year with seven counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering.
