Sri Lanka, who are eighth in the world in both formats, will be expected to beat England, who won both white-ball series against Australia in July.

Knight told Sport that we can improve our skill execution.

From 9 September, three one-day internationals will follow the three-match T20 series in Hove.

“We weren’t perfect in the Ashes, which is fine – you don’t expect perfection.” Knight said.

Nevertheless, we can continue to improve, especially in terms of bowling and skill execution at the end of innings when batters are going.

It’s clear that T20 has been our strongest format with the bat, but the length of 50 overs, combined with a few young players who haven’t played much 50-over cricket, makes things harder.

There are definitely skill improvements we can make to keep improving as a team, so hopefully we can continue to do that on the pitch and in the nets.”
