In order to sign Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on loan, Barcelona needs to create some space in their squad for Fati.

A purchase obligation is not included in Brighton’s deal for the 20-year-old.

Fati was also linked with Tottenham, but he is believed to have been impressed by Brighton’s style of play under Roberto de Zerbi.

After qualifying for the Europa League, Brighton will play European football for the first time this season if the deal goes through.

Despite being born in Guinea-Bissau, Fati chose to represent Spain and was part of their World Cup squad last year.

He signed a new contract with Barcelona in 2021 that runs until 2027 and includes a buyout clause of 1 billion euros.
