The Proud Boys’ former leader Enrique Tarrio has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

As US lawmakers certify President Joe Biden’s victory, it is the longest sentence handed down so far to a ringleader in the attack.

Despite not being present during the riot, Tarrio helped organize the far-right group’s participation.

A total of 1,100 people have been arrested in connection with the Capitol riots.

It appears that the rioters supported then-president Donald Trump, who refuses to lose the 2020 election.

The President has promised to pardon most or all of the rioters if he is re-elected in 2024.

A jury convicted Tarrio in May of seditious conspiracy, a charge from the American Civil War, and other charges.

An emotional Tarrio apologized to police and residents of Washington DC on Tuesday before learning his fate

“I am extremely ashamed and disappointed that they were made to suffer,” he told Washington’s federal courthouse. For the rest of my life, I will live with that shame.”

“I was my own worst enemy,” Tarrio said while wearing an orange jail uniform.

As a result of my hubris, I convinced myself that I had been unfairly targeted.

“I am not a political zealot,” Tarrio said, acknowledging that Trump lost the November 2020 presidential election.

I had no intention of inflicting harm or changing the election results.

It didn’t even occur to me that the election results could be changed.”

“Please show me mercy,” Tarrio begged the judge. “Please don’t take my 40s away from me.”

When his mother asked the judge for leniency earlier, he was seen wiping tears from his eyes.
