England’s previous best was 180, made by Jason Roy against Australia in Melbourne in 2018. Stokes’ 182 beat that.

Stokes hammered nine sixes and 15 fours in his 124-ball stay in only his third ODI since coming out of retirement for this year’s World Cup.

Stokes and Malan added 199 for the third wicket against the Black Caps, a record partnership for England in an ODI. Malan’s 96 helped cement his place in the starting XI for the World Cup.

England scored 368 runs despite losing their last six wickets for 32 runs. Trent Boult’s five-point haul was extraordinary in light of Stokes’ carnage.
