AI will eventually create a situation where ‘no job is needed’

Artificial intelligence could eventually lead to everyone losing their jobs, according to Elon Musk.

A billionaire technology entrepreneur who owns Tesla, SpaceX, X, the company formerly known as Twitter, and the newly formed AI startup xAI said Thursday that AI has the potential to become the “most disruptive force in history.”

For the first time, we will have something that is smarter than the smartest human,” Musk said at Lancaster House, an official government residence.

“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when that moment will occur, but there will come a point when no jobs are needed,” Musk said alongside British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. If you wanted a job for personal satisfaction, you could have one. However, the AI would be able to do everything.”

Musk joked, to the audience’s laughter, “I don’t know whether that makes people comfortable or uncomfortable.”.

“If you wish for a magic genie, you can wish for anything you want, and there’s no limit to it. There is no three wish limit nonsense, both good and bad comes from it. The challenge in the future will be finding meaning in life.”

In the past, Musk has warned of the dangers AI poses to humanity, saying once that it may be more dangerous than nuclear weapons. An open letter released earlier this year by numerous tech leaders urged a pause on AI development beyond OpenAI’s GPT-4 software.

In the summit, the U.S. and China, which clashed most tensely over technology, agreed to find global consensus on some of the most complex questions related to artificial intelligence.
