Despite winning their first five qualifiers, Steve Clarke’s side could still breach their 15-point mark, with the top two qualifying.

Scotland’s next chance to qualify for Germany in 2024 is against the Spanish in Seville on 12 October.

Even if Norway loses in Cyprus, they would qualify. In Tuesday’s game, Erling Haaland opened the scoring midway through the first half before Martin Odegaard doubled the lead eight minutes later.

In stoppage time, Budu Zivzivadze set up a nerve-wracking conclusion, but the hosts held on to preserve their slim hopes.

Spain beat Cyprus 6-0 in Granada on Tuesday to move within six points of Scotland with a game to play.

To close out their failed World Cup bid, Scotland have won six straight games in Group A, including a 2-0 victory over Spain at Hampden.

In a rain-soaked Hampden, Cyprus lost home and away, while Georgia lost 2-1 to Norway.

On Saturday 2 December, Clarke’s squad will visit Georgia and Norway before the draw for the finals in Germany.

It would be the Scots’ first major men’s tournament in 23 years if they qualify for Germany.
