Newsom debate two powerhouse US governors will fight it out.

Two prominent political fighters – a Democrat and a Republican – will meet in a debate almost a year before the American voters go to the polls in 2024.

That’s Donald Trump and Joe Biden, who are seemingly heading toward a rematch in 2020.

This week’s showdown between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom creates an interesting contrast – and perhaps a preview of future political fights.

An established cable news network and conservative talk show host, Sean Hannity, agreed to host the made-for-television event after months of verbal sparring.

Let’s take a look at the tale of the tape as the two men prepare to face each other.

His performances in the Republican primary debates have been competent but bland, doing little to elevate him in conservative eyes.

The Florida governor has another party debate next week, but this may be his best opportunity to change the trajectory of a presidential campaign that trails Mr Trump by a wide margin and is on the verge of losing second place to former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Further, Sean Hannity hosts this contest on conservative Fox News – which should be a friendly environment for the Republicans.

The difference between Mr Newsom and Mr DeSantis is that Mr DeSantis will be performing in front of the kind of voters who will decide his fate in the coming months. Mr Newsom will get credit just for showing up, and there will be fewer Democrats watching if he doesn’t perform correctly.

Mr. Newsom may be facing a fighter with his back to the wall, which can be explosive. This should make for an entertaining watch at the very least.
