Meta’s Threads struggles to grow amid rivalry with Elon Musk’s X

Meta’s Threads real-time messaging app isn’t attracting as many users as it did during its blockbuster launch in July.

According to Insider Intelligence’s Threads forecast, published Tuesday, the Twitter clone ranks near the bottom among the most popular social media platforms as measured by the number of U.S. users.

According to Insider Intelligence, Threads will have 23.7 million U.S. users in 2023, far behind Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, which have 177.9 million, 135.2 million, and 102.3 million users, respectively. Its closest rival, X, will have 56.1 million U.S. users in 2023, the forecast said, meaning Threads will have less than half as many users as Twitter’s messaging app.

Threads will continue to “rank second-to-last among social networks” in the U.S. market through 2025, according to the analyst firm.

In response to a request for comment, Meta did not respond.

Third-party estimates from mobile analytics firms such as Sensor Tower and Similarweb have recently documented declining Threads usage.

As Threads launched, it quickly gained millions of users thanks to its easy sign-up process. As a mainstream alternative to X, which several analyst firms, including Insider Intelligence, have suggested is losing users under Elon Musk’s ownership, the messaging app has also thrived.

Threads received an initial boost from Twitter’s missteps, but it can’t rely on X defectors to grow, Insider Intelligence principal analyst Jasmine Enberg said.
