Chelsea’s Lauren James has formed a strong bond with Lucy Bronze, the England defender who keeps her feet on the ground.

James, 21, produced a stunning performance in Tuesday’s 6-1 win over China to stand out at this year’s Women’s World Cup.

Manager Sarina Wiegman said she did “special things” in as many games as she has three goals and three assists.

The two of us have formed a bond because we are in similar situations,” said Bronze.

As for me, I came to the limelight in a different way, but I can give her advice. I can help keep her grounded, but she’s good at that anyway.

Like myself, she gets misinterpreted a little bit by other players or the media because she doesn’t always smile.

She asked me questions about things other players hadn’t asked when she came into her first camp.

It reminds me so much of myself when I was young. She is shy, but she has a lot of confidence in herself.”

The 31-year-old Bronze has won almost every trophy in her club career and has played in five major tournaments for England.

During the 2015 World Cup, she scored crucial goals en route to the last four, claiming the right-back position from Alex Scott.

“I can’t expect LJ (James) to score in every game and put in performances like she did against China every game. She’s still young and is still learning how to play at the highest level,” said Bronze.

You’ve seen her perform at Chelsea and you know how good she is. She’s definitely made an impression on the world stage, but this is just the beginning.”

With Keira Walsh injured, England switched to an unfamiliar set-up of three at the back to counter China’s attack. James’ goal was the highlight of an exciting performance for England.
