In addition to Harry Brook and Ben Duckett, pace bowler Jofra Archer will not be available.

A group led by Jos Buttler will include uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson, 25.

After winning the trophy on home soil four years ago, England will defend it in India in October and November.

As Archer is unavailable, Atkinson, who has only played two List A matches, will provide a high-pace option for Wood.

Also included are left-armers Reece Topley and David Willey. Topley gets another chance at World Cup glory after being ruled out of last year’s T20 triumph. Willey, meanwhile, plays his first 50-over World Cup after being omitted from 2019.

Four years ago, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, and spinner Adil Rashid were part of the team.

Buttler will lead a 50-over World Cup for the first time after taking over from Eoin Morgan last year. In Australia, Buttler led England to the T20 title, making them the first men’s team to hold both limited-overs world titles at the same time.

Their goal is to become both the first men’s team to defend a 50-over World Cup since 2007 and the first non-host team to win it since then.

Prior to the ODI series against New Zealand, four T20s will be played against the Black Caps.

For that match, England have named a 15-man squad, including Atkinson and Josh Tongue and John Turner, both of whom are uncapped pace bowlers. Ahmed, a 19-year-old leg-spinner, is also selected.

At the end of September, England will also play three ODIs against Ireland following the series against the Black Caps. As the matches are close to the World Cup, a number of players will be rested, and a new squad will be named later.
