Having played 20 Tests, the 31-year-old will bolster Durham’s attack at Worcestershire next Tuesday and at home against Leicestershire.

In order to seal both promotion and the Division Two title, they only need five points from their remaining two games.

England will be away with fast bowlers Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts.

Fernando was supposed to be available for Durham’s previous match against Sussex, but he arrived late due to a visa issue.

Durham director of cricket Marcus North told the club website, “We felt the need to recruit a quick overseas bowler as we look to maintain our strong season finish.”.

“We look forward to seeing what he can bring to Durham in September, as he is an experienced Test and first-class cricketer.”

Fernando has taken 50 Test wickets at an average of 37 and 267 first class wickets at an average of 30.
