As Sri Lanka were dismissed for 106, pace bowlers Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer picked up three wickets each.

The leg-spinner Sarah Glenn also claimed 3-20, while the wicketkeeper Amy Jones took five catches – a record for England women.

Despite struggling with the bat during the T20 series, England made no mistakes when faced with such a modest target.

As England’s third debutant, Maia Bouchier hit the winning runs in her 17-run innings while Tammy Beaumont made 32 and Emma Lamb 27.

With victory in the second ODI at Northampton on Tuesday, England can wrap up the series with a seven-wicket victory. Sri Lanka excelled in the T20 series, and the 2-1 scoreline was one of England’s worst results and one of Sri Lanka’s best.

The England team was ruthless and efficient in dispatching Sri Lanka, who had beaten them once in ODIs and are playing their first 50-over series here.

A green-tinged pitch in Durham gave England the opportunity to bowl first, and Sri Lanka had little answer to Gaur and Filer’s attack.

England’s chase never seemed likely, with Beaumont and Nat Sciver-Brunt returning to a batting line-up that underperformed in T20s.

In addition, the retirements of Katherine Sciver-Brunt and Anya Shrubsole have left the England pace attack in flux, but Gaur and Filer are showing that the future is in good hands.
