Rishi Sunak makes ‘historic’ G20 visit to India

Rishi Sunak has arrived in Delhi to meet world leaders – becoming the first prime minister of Indian heritage to visit the country.
The “historic” visit will serve as a powerful reminder that the two countries are connected through a living bridge.
In addition to Mr Sunak, Akshata Murty is accompanying him, who was born and raised in India. She is the daughter of one of India’s richest men.
It is a summit of leaders of the G20 – the world’s 19 biggest economies plus the European Union.
There is something of a diplomatic blancmange going on at the G20. Other than big economies, many of its members share very little in common.
But that is the point – bringing together the countries that drive the global economy.
A product of the 21st century, the G20 was born in 1999 and has grown in stature since the financial crisis of 2008.
It means that the discussions within it are often very broad. There is also the chance for leaders to meet one on one, in what are known as bilateral meetings.
In a speech on the way to the summit, Sunak called India “a country that is dear to me” and said he was “excited to be back”.
It’s obviously special. I saw somewhere that I’m called India’s son-in-law. I hope that’s meant affectionately.”
