Reznikov had led the ministry since before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Zelensky said it was time for “new approaches” in the defense ministry in his nightly address.

As Mr Reznikov’s successor, Mr Zelensky has nominated Rustem Umerov, who runs Ukraine’s State Property Fund.

According to the Ukrainian president, the ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction with the military and society.

Media reports have speculated that Mr Reznikov will become Kyiv’s new ambassador to London, where he has developed good relationships with senior politicians.

In the wake of the Ukraine war, the 57-year-old has become a well-known figure. He has regularly attended meetings with Ukraine’s western allies and played a key role in lobbying for more military hardware.

However, his dismissal has been anticipated for some time. He told reporters last week that he was exploring other positions with the Ukrainian president.

Former defence minister said he would probably agree to work on another project if Mr Zelensky offered it.

In preparation for future NATO membership, Ukrainian defence advisor Yuriy Sak Mr Reznikov spearheaded the transformation of the ministry.

According to him, Mr Reznikov’s legacy is that he convinced foreign governments for arms that the impossible is possible.

Although the cabinet reshuffle is unlikely to affect Ukraine’s battlefield strategy, the campaign is being overseen by Gen Valery Zaluzhny, the commander of its armed forces.

In Mr Zelensky’s administration, weeding out corruption in the state is seen as essential to Ukraine’s desire to join Western institutions, including the European Union. The dismissal of Mr Reznikov occurs amid a wider anti-corruption drive.
