Kylian Mbappe’s future has become this summer’s biggest transfer story.

Since France’s captain refused a contract extension with Paris St-Germain, the French champions are looking to cash in on the record goalscorer to avoid losing him next summer.

Al-Hilal shocked the footballing world on Monday with an eye-watering world record bid of £259m for the World Cup winner.

212 goals have been scored by Mbappe in 260 games since he joined PSG in 2017, first on loan from Monaco.

Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi comprise the Qatari-owned club’s strikeforce, yet they have failed to win the Champions League despite their domestic success.

Despite having a contract until June 2024, Mbappe recently informed the club he will stay this season without extending it.

He has been left out of PSG’s preseason tour to Japan and South Korea due to the bitter fallout.

Osaka, Japan, was the first stop on PSG’s trip, where they drew 0-0 with another Saudi team, Al-Nassr.

After the match, PSG defender Danilo Pereira said that Kylian Mbappe is an excellent player, but he is not here.

As a member of the club, I am unable to comment on that decision.”

The PSG chairman, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has made it clear he intends to take a tough stance and Mbappe may be sidelined for a year if he doesn’t resolve the current impasse.

Mbappe has now been granted permission to speak to Al-Hilal, one of four Saudi Arabian clubs owned by the Public Investment Fund.

It is expected that rival bids will also be made by European clubs.

According to French journalist Lisa Leroux, the £259m offer proves Mbappe ‘really is a once-in-a-generation player’, but “he won’t go, for him it’s more than money”.

Mbappe would become the highest-paid player in football if he moved to Saudi Arabia, eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo’s reported £177m-a-year earning at Al Nassr following his move from Manchester United.

With commercial arrangements and image rights on top of his salary, Mbappe could earn close to 700 million euros (£602 million) a year.

“I think no player in the history of football has ever been offered a salary like this,” Leroux said. It would be historic and out of this world for him to receive such a salary.

This would amount to about 59 million euros per month, or almost 2 million euros per day.
