Germany were beaten by Austria to suffer a second straight defeat
Germany were beaten by Austria to suffer a second straight defeat as Julian Nagelsmann’s reign continues to get off to a difficult start.
In addition to his opening win against the USA, the ex-Bayern Munich manager drew with Mexico and lost to Turkey in his next two matches.
A contract for the 36-year-old came into effect in September, after Germany hosted Euro 2024, replacing Hansi Flick.
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria led after Marcel Sabitzer’s goal, before Christoph Baumgartner clinched victory.
Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane was also sent off for pushing Phillipp Mwene over after the defender objected to a tackle in the 49th minute.
Nagelsmann told German broadcaster ZDF, “We are not playing freely. We have an unbelievable amount to do in each position.” It is important to accept the situation, but we cannot behave like victims.
The group functions well at training, but it does not translate onto the pitch. We lack some self-confidence, which is not surprising given the past few months.”
In an interview with Sport Bild, Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan said: “There is frustration and disappointment. At the end, we made it too easy for the Austrians to create chances. The defence is not alone; it begins up front.”
During the Euro 2024 group stage draw on 2 December, both sides will find out who their opponents will be.
