A railway bridge under construction collapsed in north-eastern India, killing at least 26 people and leaving more missing.

In the state of Mizoram, the incident occurred near the town of Sairang.

Local media reports said 40 workers were at the site when part of the bridge collapsed.

An investigation has been launched by the railway authority into the cause of the incident. So far, three people have been rescued.

One of the bridge’s 100m-high (328ft) pillars had to be lowered down by an injured worker.

Approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, the incident occurred over the Kurung River.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office, “all possible assistance is being provided to those affected.”

Next of kin of those killed will receive about 200,000 rupees (£1,900; $2,400).

According to railway officials, all the victims are from West Bengal.

In his statement, Mizoram’s Home Minister Lalchamliana expressed his deep sorrow and sympathy for the families affected by this tragic event.

Almost two years after work began, the Khamrang-Sihhmui railway line is due to be completed in December.

There are a lot of accidents on these types of construction sites in India.

A pedestrian suspension bridge collapsed in Gujarat, India’s western state, killing more than 140 people last October.
