How Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder in Canada

Two masked gunmen shot Hardeep Singh Nijjar in his truck in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey in mid-June.

Despite months of efforts, the unsolved murder continues to reverberate, both in Canada and abroad. In early July, hundreds of Sikh separatists marched in Toronto, along with a few others in London, Melbourne and San Francisco, to protest the Indian government, which they believe is responsible for his death.

In September, Justin Trudeau accused India of being behind Mr Nijjar’s death, saying Canadian intelligence had uncovered “credible allegations” that agents of the Indian government were involved.

There is no evidence that the Indian government was involved in the murder.

As a result of the 45-year-old’s killing, some groups have been demanding a separate homeland for Sikhs, a religious minority that makes up about 2% of Indians.

There were several violent attacks and deaths in Punjab during the 1980s when the movement was at its peak. In recent years, supporters in the diaspora community have intensified their calls for a separate state after armed forces ran special operations against the movement.

Khalistan has been strongly opposed by India. Punjab’s mainstream political parties have condemned violence and separatism.
