OpenAI chief becomes the first to get Indonesia’s ‘Golden Visa’

Indonesia has awarded OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman its first “Golden Visa” — a week after the program was launched to attract foreign investment to Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
“There are several categories of golden visas aside from those based on investment or capital investment, one of which is the golden visa which is given to figures who have an international reputation and can provide benefits for Indonesia,” Silmy Karim, Indonesia’s director general of immigration, said.
“We hope that Altman can contribute to the development and use of artificial intelligence in Indonesia with this golden visa,” Karim said.
Altman has a Golden Visa that lasts for 10 years. The American entrepreneur will benefit from priority screening at airports throughout the country’s vast archipelago, along with longer stays and ease of entry and exit.
He was in Indonesia earlier this year as part of a whirlwind tour that took him to Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore, among other cities.
AI chatbot ChatGPT has gone viral for its ability to generate humanlike responses to users’ prompts. In just two months after its launch, it reached 100 million users.
AI is a threat to human extinction on par with nuclear war, according to Altman and other tech leaders recently in an open letter. They stressed that reducing the risks associated with the technology should be a global priority.
