Amazon warns their employees who don’t go to the office

Some of Amazon’s US-based employees have been warned that the company is closely monitoring their attendance at work. It has sent emails to those it believes don’t follow its return-to-work policies.
According to Amazon, the message highlights the company’s determination to enforce its rules, which require workers to report to the office three days a week, in the face of employee backlash and a broader push to reduce remote work.
The email circulating on social media shows Amazon told some employees they were “not currently meeting our expectations of joining your colleagues in the office at least three days a week.”
The email continued, “Now we expect you to be in the office three days a week or more.”.
As a result of the policy’s implementation in May, many Amazon employees have complied, “and you can feel the surge in energy and collaboration among Amazonians and across teams.”
Thousands of workers responded to a poll about the email on Blind, a social media platform where workers talk anonymously about their employers.
On the platform, users identified as Amazon employees expressed outrage over the email, while others endorsed it.
Other Amazon employees, however, claimed they did not receive the corporate email despite following the policy.
Amazon said it followed up to clarify who was meant to receive the original message: those who seldom use their workplace ID badges to enter an Amazon office building.
“The email was sent to employees who have badged in fewer than 3 days a week for 5 or more of the last 8 weeks, have not badged in 3 days a week for 3 or more of the past 4 weeks, and their building has been ready for at least 8 weeks,” the followup note to employees stated.
Some individuals may have received the notice in error and were encouraged to contact their managers to correct the error.
In May, more than 1,000 Amazon corporate employees staged a walkout to protest the company’s attendance tracking policy. The walkout organizers have described the company’s approach as “rigid, one-size-fits-all”.
Technology giants had pioneered remote-work policies at the start of the pandemic. Many companies are now moving in the opposite direction, and Amazon is not the only one. It was announced in June that Google would strictly enforce its hybrid work schedule of three days a week.
