Kachin Independence Army (KIA), an insurgent group fighting the country’s ruling military Junta, has a military camp nearby.

All the victims were civilians, according to a KIA spokesman.

The country has been embroiled in conflict since a military coup overthrew the government in 2021.

According to the exiled National Unity Government (NUG), the attack on the camp was a war crime and a crime against humanity.

The military was contacted for comment.

Having seized power from the civilian government, the military has increasingly used air strikes against its opponents.

Local media showed bodies being pulled from rubble and dozens of body bags lying side by side.

Mong Lai Khet Quarter is about two miles from KIA’s headquarters in Laiza, where the attack took place late on Monday night.

There has been conflict in the area for a long time.

Locals say there have been no recent fights near the camp.

Many civilians live in internal displacement camps in and around the town, which is close to the Chinese border.

Even before the coup, the KIA was one of dozens of ethnic insurgent groups battling the military.

Colonel Naw Bu of the KIA said 56 people were injured in the latest attack, 44 of whom were hospitalized.

Kachin State’s military launched airstrikes on Anampa last October, killing more than 60 people
